There will be days when I write in humor and jest, and there will be days when I don’t, where I will write with a more serious introspection instead. You will get the full spectrum of me throughout the year, and today you will be getting the latter.
Last night I made you aware of my lack of sleep and nocturnal habits, so today after work I did something about it. I took a “time out” for me to sleep for a couple hours in the Zen peace of my own massage studio, and do what I tell everybody else who comes to see me “to let go and get away from it all.” I did exactly that, and it was the best, most peaceful and restful sleep I have had in a long while. All thoughts, feelings, stress, and the like disappeared in the candlelight as soon as my head hit the pillow and my body melted into the heated table. Why I don’t do this more often I don’t know. but I think I will from now on. It’s pretty heavenly.
Today’s topic is a rather large one, “A Woman’s Worth”, and in no way can be reduced to a single blog posting on it. To do so would be a massive injustice. As one of my Twitter followers says, “I don’t think there are words to describe a woman’s worth”, and I agree with him/her. So I’m just going to speak on a small portion of it that relates to something that happened today. I imagine this one might spark some controversy and conversations. Here it goes.
These days I find that I get tested on my commitments a lot, mostly in the area of relationships, and today was no exception. I have to admit, it’s tough with all the distractions. I get asked all the time for the “friends with benefits” package, to which I’ll always respond no. To me, that already tells me that they do not know the value of a woman, and I would be heading down a path of heartache I do not wish to travel. I’ve learned, and I’m much smarter than that. I know my value, and I know that I’m worth more than someone’s cheap sexual fix. No thanks, I’ll pass. I’m looking for a quality companion that reflects and compliments who I am. Someday, I WILL meet someone who understands what I’m talking about and who value themselves just as much.
That being said, these situations do allow me to get very clear and even more committed to what it is I want every single time. I love how the Universe puts distractions in the way to see how serious you are about your goal, often to see if you will settle for less and undermine your own worth. That’s my take on it anyway. It reminds me of a quote that goes a little something like this:
“Walls or obstacles weren’t put in the way to stop you from achieving your goal, they are there to see how bad you want that goal, and if you are willing to climb the wall to get it.”
Well, I’ve seen what’s on the other side, so I’m climbing. Up and over I go, and if I fall, I’ll get back up and do it again. I tell you, nothing can get in the way of a self-respecting woman geared with determination.
If you haven’t already heard the song “A Woman’s Worth” by Alicia Keys, I highly recommend giving it a listen. It talks about seeing the value in each other; to love, respect, and appreciate each other - and how when you do these things you can have everything…and if you don’t you will just as easily lose everything.
Here’s to hoping you find the “real man” …or “real woman” that you truly deserve. Enjoy the video.
"A Woman's Worth" by Alicia Keys
You could buy me diamonds, you could buy me pearls
Take me on a cruise around the world
Baby you know I'm worth it
Dinner lit by candles, run my bubble bath
Make love tenderly to last and last
Baby you know I'm worth it
Wanna please wanna keep wanna treat your woman right
Not just told but to show that you know she is worth your time
You will lose if you choose to refuse to put her first
She will if she can't find a man who knows her worth, mhmn
Cuz a real man knows a real woman when he sees her
And a real woman knows a real man ain't afraid to please her
And a real woman knows a real man always comes first
And a real man just can't deny a woman's worth
If you treat me fairly I'll give you all my goods
Treat you like a real woman should
Baby I know you're worth it
If you never play me, promise not to bluff
I'll hold you down when shit gets rough
Baby I know you're worth it
She rolls the mile makes you smile all the while being true
Don't take for granted the passion that she has for you
You will lose if you choose to refuse to put her first
She will if she can't find a man who knows her worth, oh
Cuz a real man knows a real woman when he sees her
And a real woman knows a real man ain't afraid to please her
And a real woman knows a real man always comes first
And a real man just can't deny a woman's worth
No need to read between the lines, spell it out for you
Just hear this song cuz you can't go wrong when you value
A woman, woman, woman, a woman's worth
Cuz a real man knows a real woman when he sees her
And a real woman knows a real man ain't afraid to please her
And a real woman knows a real man always comes first
And a real man just can't deny a woman's worth

Brick walls are there for a reason. They give us a chance to show how badly we want something

If you have not read this book please do so it will change your life ;)
Yes, Randy Pausch...thank you for giving the proper dues to the person who I got the quote from. I could only remember the message, but I couldn't remember who said it. I find his message very powerful, inspiring, and moving. What a fantastic gift he gave to the world. I haven't read his book, but I did watch the video. Perhaps I'll also go out and get the book too. Thanks again for leaving a comment...good to know someone is reading my content. :o)
ReplyDeleteWell written Nicole.
ReplyDeleteOriginally I was going to say something about "friends with benefits", but I don't want to waste my time on that. Yes, it did upset me, considering what your 365 journey is about, but rather I'd like to share some anecdotes on the women in my life.
My Mom. I love her. It's been difficult for her since the loss of her love, my dad. Until he passed away, she always identified herself as his wife. It's because of her, he lived as long as he could. He loved taking care of her and it's because he knew she took care of the home while he was out working as a fisherman, he worked harder to provide for our family. Their relationship was one of equals. Today, without him by her side physically, she's challenging life by redefining herself, knowing he's watching over her, encouraging her. He knew my mom's value.
Now my sister, my sister and I get along fabulously. She's 10 years older than me, but looks younger than me! Anyway, despite the age gap, she got me into books and the library and discovering what life has to offer. When she was only 19, she took my brother and me to stay with her over the summer, when at the time she lived in San Francisco. Can you believe it? A 19 year old taking care of a 9 and 6 year old, a thousand miles away from home? It's those memories I value, and try to pay her back by helping her son, my nephew, achieve his dreams.
Finally the value of my 3 nieces, the daughters of my younger brother. Especially the middle child. I love them all, but she and I have this bond that goes beyond description. The middle child loves hanging out with me. We do the regular kid stuff together, but she has interest in design (she's 8) so I take the time to show her how to use Photoshop and Illustrator. We also shoot video together, so I let her direct and choose the shots to edit. I want to keep encouraging her to explore her creativity.
To come back to your theme, "A Woman's Worth", I hope those guys you were talking about learn to be men. Real men know the value of the women in their lives and therefore treat their girlfriend/partner/wife with the respect they deserve.
Amen Richard. Thanks so much for sharing your anecdotes, I loved hearing them. I love hearing about your parents, and how they perfectly model what a relationship is all about through their love and respect for eachother.
ReplyDeleteYour sister too sounds amazing. A woman who sees the value in others, takes another under her wing, and takes the time to teach and inspire is not uncommon. It's what we do, but it is not often appreciated. I must say, you've had some pretty GREAT role models!
And then there's you. Your gratitude for a woman's worth shows. And to hear that you are now sharing that same gratitude to encourage another young woman to grow and spread her wings is a beautiful thing.
Thank you so much for being the person you are. Your dad, your mom, and your sister would be proud.
